Hideki Matsui's Real Rookie Card

Here it is:
From the 1993 BBM set. I've got most of the '93 set done, and now all I'm missing are all of the Hideo Nomo cards, any holograms I may decide to go after (technically, the set has either 2 or 12, or none), and the key card: Ichiro's rookie card.
Here's the back. It's amazing that at 19 years old (or even 18, probably, when the photo was taken, fresh out of high school), Matsui looked pretty old - he looks like a 40 year old to me. And no smile.

This weekend, I'll be searching for some of those Nomos. He has something like seven cards in the set, though they shouldn't cost too much. Shouldn't. We'll see.

    1. It is. 1990s BBM cards stand out even if they're pretty "basic". Calbee may have nicer photography and a cleaner look, but BBM cards can become icons. (Put 1999 and 2000 Ichiro Calbee cards together and cover the year. Which is which?)

  2. Awesome card! Do you ever see complete sets of these for sale in Japan? If so, how much do the go for? I love the simple design. Plus who wouldn't want an Ichiro and Godzilla rookie cards?

    1. BBM flagship sets from any year are frequently expensive. Ichiro's RC tends to go for about 10,000 yen or more. And then you pay more per base card here than you tend to in the US - complete sets tend to be priced around 20,000-30,000 yen or more. In the right place, you can find them for 10,000 yen or so. Even more modern BBM series sets can run you over 5000 yen each.
