Back to Back Back Posts Part Three

This trilogy comes to a close in a Big way. Namely, Topps Big. Topps Kids had some big cartoons on the backs of their cards, but Topps Big did it first. Here are the best card backs that I had in the lot of 1998 Topps Big cards.

Mark Eichhorn is an accomplished impressionist.
Pascual Perez got his drivers license and then got lost driving in Atlanta, and ended up in Canada, I suppose. Atlanta does have confusing streets. None of them go to Canada.
Bob Horner played in Japan. His shirt says doru (basically, dollar).
Oddibe McDowell toured Japan. I'm curious why he has a parasol, because for the most part, only women carry those. And that torii in the background is all wrong.
Before 1985, Glenn Wilson could never see the ball. He made it to the majors on luck and hearing ability alone.
Ozzie Smith was white, apparently. Do you remember The Ozzie Smith Story? Can I watch it on Netflix?
Dion had a pony. And he hit a ball into a bird.
"Well, at least my bat made it!"
Mookie's Cookies!
Darnell Coles received a UCLA scholarship offer. He got down on his hands and knees and studied the manila courier envelope that was slipped under his door.
"Derives enjoyment from exotic aquariums" and "finds sports cars pleasurable" are two phrases I never expected to find on baseball cards.
Andy Van Slyke played computer chess and listened to classical and jazz music.

His cousin, Edgar, played with Mariners in 1987. Edgar Martinez? Never heard of him.
Finally, Mike Dunne's hobbies include collecting baseball cards.

That'll finish off the card backs from those junk wax cards! This took quite a long time, but I really enjoyed this adventure down a path less traveled. Until next time...

  1. That Carmelo is kind of cool. It gives Edgar fans another "rookie" card to chase down.

    1. Obscure finds are always fun! And depending on when it was released, it might have beat out Fleer for his first MLB card (technically).

  2. James, Coles and Carmelo Martinez all ended up playing in Japan in the 90's

  3. I can imagine that there are far more players I didn't even realize in this group of cards who ended up in Japan, Korea, or Taiwan.
