The third series of Calbee chips have been on shelves for a couple months now, and I bought just a single bag for myself. Where I built (um, am still building) Series 1 mostly from bags, the second and third series were picked up relatively inexpensively from Yahoo Auctions.
Of course, there's a bit of fun in opening packs yourself, which for Calbee means getting a bag of chips. What were my two cards?
First is a Clutch Hitter card. This is the new-for-Series 3 insert that is probably not really any more rare than the base cards. But I need it for my type collection, so right off the bat this pack is worth the price of the chips!
The second card is a Starcard insert. My set from Yahoo Auctions included the Starcard insert set, so I don't need it. Hector Luna has been doing pretty good in Japan - he batted .350 in 2013 and finished 2014 with a .317 average. Star Cards are the only "premium" insert in Calbee chips these days, and there's a gold foil signature parallel as well. I still need a bunch of them for my set, which I hope to complete by the end of the year.
I'm not sure if I'll put together/buy the 2015 sets. Perhaps I'll get BBM's First and Second Versions. What do you think?
That is how I have done my Calbee set this year too. Well, almost. I have been making a point of buying each series off of Yahoo Auctions near-complete rather than fully complete, that way I have an excuse to buy a few packs and put at least some effort into completing them. It feels too much like cheating if I buy the whole thing. The only series I have complete (regular cards only) is the first one, series 2 and 3 I think I need 6 or 7 cards each for.
ReplyDeleteWhile it's not "building" a set, it's so much cheaper and easier. I feel like I might be cheating a little bit, but with so much that I'm collecting (not just Calbee sets) and a limited budget, I kind of have to take the cheapest and easiest I can. I still need to finish my Series 1 and 2 Star Card sets, which I'm hoping to do at the Tokyo CardFesta next month.
